The Saltus Athletics Programme strives to develop the whole student physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally. Our qualified staff and coaches are committed to ensuring all student-athletes have a positive experience while representing Saltus.
Saltus Athletics offers numerous opportunities to participate in team activities from the Upper Primary through the Secondary levels each year. These various teams participate in Bermuda School Sports Federation (BSSF) led competitions. In addition, several teams travel annually overseas to expand their athletic and social experiences.
Lower Primary Athletics
The goal for the early athletics and physical education at Saltus is to develop the whole student physically, intellectually, socially, and emotionally. At Lower Primary this is accomplished through fun interactive lessons designed to let students learn a variety of skills (throwing, catching, hitting, passing, etc.) with a focus on developing an appreciation for sports and related activities.
Upper Primary Athletics
Competitive sport with this age group focuses on developing teamwork, cooperation, and sportsmanship. Respect for self, teammates, coaches, opponents and officials is emphasised over winning and losing.
Secondary School Athletics
Students in Grades 6-8 attend lessons in Swimming, Netball (girls only), Football, Athletics, Cricket, Tag Rugby, Field Hockey, Basketball, health related fitness, Volleyball, Badminton, and Softball.
Our senior students have over 50 different athletic teams to choose from throughout the school year. These are typically split evenly between girls and boys teams participating in the Bermuda School Sports Federation’s (BSSF) calendar of events. The majority of the school teams are coached by our exemplary PE staff and teaching staff, supported additionally by qualified coaches from the community.
Inter-House Sports
Saltus has an extensive Inter-House programme from Upper Primary to SGY2 which dates back to the late 1800's. At the very first Sports Day on March 20th, 1888 Princess Louise presented the Victor Ludorum trophy to the champion boy. The four houses of Butterfield (green), Darrell (blue), Saltus (red) and Watlington (yellow) compete in a variety of sporting events, academic challenges and school-wide competitions throughout the year. At the end of each year, the points are totalled and the winning house is awarded the Nichol Shield.
